Then switching to the operator side in leading designs and supplier interface for base station systems. He joined LNER in 1941 initially as a messenger but then as a signalman. He succeeded his father Wilson as Darlington branch secretary of the NUR and later Secretary of the Eastern Regional Council. In 1976 he was awarded a BEM for his contribution to the railway industry.
